What's the difference between stress and anxiety?
Stress usually has a cause you can name, and it eases when the pressure does. Anxiety tends to stay after the deadline has passed, or shows up when nothing is obviously wrong.
Signs it might be more than a busy week
In your mind
- Racing or looping thoughts
- Expecting the worst
- Trouble concentrating
- Feeling irritable or on edge
In your body
- Tight chest, shallow breathing
- Poor sleep
- Tense shoulders or headaches
- Upset stomach
These are real, physical responses, not a sign you're weak.
Common kinds of anxiety
Generalised anxiety
Worry about many things, most days, that's hard to switch off.
Panic attacks
Sudden waves of fear with a racing heart and shaky breath.
Social anxiety
Fear of being judged or watched in everyday situations.
Why it happens
Pressure that doesn't let up: work, money, caring for family.
Old patterns: growing up having to be "the reliable one".
Avoidance: stepping back from what scares you can make it bigger.
Things you can try today
The 3-3-3 check
Name 3 things you see, 3 you hear, and move 3 parts of your body.
Write the worry down
On paper it's one sentence, not a loop.
Slow the out-breath
Breathe out longer than you breathe in, for a minute.
When to get help
- It's been going on for weeks
- You're avoiding people or places
- Sleep or work is suffering
In crisis? Call SOS on 1767 (24h) or mindline 1771. Emergency: 995.

I'm Deepa Swamy
Many of the people I work with arrive anxious about work or family. I use IFS, CBT and The Work of Byron Katie, depending on what fits you.
Questions about anxiety & stress counselling
What type of counselling is best for anxiety?
⌄
CBT has the strongest research behind it for anxiety. Some people prefer IFS, which works with the anxious part rather than arguing with it. On the intro call we can talk about which suits you.
What is the 3-3-3 rule for anxiety?
⌄
A quick grounding exercise: name three things you can see, three you can hear, then move three parts of your body. It brings your attention back to the present when worry spirals.
How many sessions will I need?
⌄
It depends on what you bring. Some people feel a difference within a few sessions; longer-standing anxiety can take more. We review progress together as we go.
